would have done better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but, you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i've never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then-senator obama had no record to defend. and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was, i think, very legitimately attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that -- the failure of dodd/frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time. but, one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit of -- or something of a boost today. >> we've got the vp debate coming up. you said about joe biden he's the gift that keeps on giving. are you hoping that he's going to be giving some sp

survey, just out today, among likely voters, romney now leads obama 49-45. three weeks ago, pugh had the president on top 51-43. that's quite a turn around. it's due to the debate where 66% told pugh they say mitt romney won. just 20% believe mr. obama prevailed. rasmussen dale tracking poll today has the race tied among likely voters. 48% each. in iowa and colorado, the president is hanging tough. in iowa, it's obama 49, romney 47. colorado, obama 49, romney 48. both are dead heats within the margin of error. joining us from washington, democratic strategist marge mcclinton in for juan williams and mary katherine ham. the pugh number, 49-45 surprised me, mary katherine. same with you? >> i was a little surprised at how far it moved. i'm not surprised it's moving in mitt romney's favor. i mean, this was 70 million people watching and the guy who showed up, mitt romney showed up to do that job that night was the best he had ever looked and certainly obama, the worst he ever looked on a stage with someone else, i would say when we have seen him in the situations before. people tuned in

. republicans were thrilled with his performance. democrats were not so thrilled with president obama's performance. the question is going to be has mitt romney been able in a race where he's been clearly behind the president to hurt him enough and sustain that momentum over the next three weeks. that's what's really critical. there have been strong debates, john kerry had a strong debate against george w. bush in 2004. but he wasn't able to translate that into lasting benefit. that's the best of the next three weeks, to see whether romney can keep it going or whether president obama comes out with a higher level of aggression, higher level of energy in the next debate and stop the momentum that romney accumulated last night. >> okay. yeah, i had so many different thoughts, john, as we watched the whole thing. i remember that a lot of republicans were supporting newt gingrich because just for this moment, they wanted -- they thought newt was such a great debater, they wanted to see someone like newt talk to president obama about his policies and about the last four years. and they tho

didn't prepare him for the aggressive romney that i saw a few weeks ago on the sunday shows? i think they didn't prepare him. the president has to look presidential. i don't think president obama is going to call mitt romney a liar on the next debate. that's not presidential. he will be more aggressive. i don't think mitt romney is necessarily a liar, he just manages to convince himself that any position is fine at the time. ted kennedy said it best when romney debated ted kennedy, i'm the pro choice candidate, my opponent is the multiple choice candidate. mitt romney says whatever he has to say. there's no core belief there. that is going to be a problem for him in the general election. i think people are into that. i think they get that politicians say anything and obama doesn't do that. he pretty much tells it like it is. did he do a good job in the debate? no. i think he could have been more aggressive. >> i want to ask you about vice president biden yesterday, on the stump some people are calling it a gaffe, that they want to raise taxes by $1 trillion. guess
